On depression
I recently learned a few things about depression. In Romania we talk a lot about it,but we don't really know much. There are two major types of depression: endogenous depression and exogenous depression.
The first type occurs without any reason,in cycles;it is commonly known as unipolar depression and it is also present in patients with bipolar syndrome. It is accentuated in the morning and usually manifests during spring or autumn.Studies imply that the condition is triggered by a decrease in the level of monoamines:the neurotransmitters such as serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine. That's why usually unipolar depression is treated with medication(with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, such as antidepressants e.g. Prozac®)
The second type of depression occurs after a traumatic event and it is accentuated during the evening. The exogenous depression is usually treated without medication, using psychological therapy.
I believe it is painful to live like that, therapy is complicated and drugs don't usually help that much. Why? Well, there are some issues concerning the compliance(describes the degree to which a patient follows the medical advice that he was given);an individual that goes through depression will often sabotage his therapy, trying to protect himself. He might also hide his depression or even worse, develop a sort of masochism, actually starting to enjoy his estate.
Here's some advice from yours truly(a melancholic but never depressed individual):
Don't ignore you problems, express you emotions(gotta work on that area myself).
Repressing trauma was never helpful (try watching Psycho, you'll get it).
Do stuff!Apathy is one step forward to depression.
Hugs.
P.S.: I'm back!
